MLK Assembly Inspires

“Service” and “giving back” were the running themes at last Friday’s third annual K-12 Martin Luther King Day Assembly. The inspiring program included musical performances, remarks by student speakers, and the presentation of The Potomac School Award for Exemplary Service.

Third grader Neelie Hoffmann, sixth grader Ryleigh Butler, eighth grader Ajay Majmudar, and senior Jeremy DeLaVille shared reflections on service, freedom, and hope. Third, Sixth, IS, and US Choruses sang This Little Light of Mine (1943/ John W. Work III). Additional musical performances included the Potomac Jazz band and guest artists who played two songs (Pilgrimage and Freedom).

Another highlight of the assembly was the presentation of The Potomac School Award for Exemplary Service, an honor designed to recognize members of the wider community who are making a difference through service to others. The award was presented to Omari Pearson, founder of Passion to Purpose. Director of Community Engagement James Hightower III closed the event by reflecting on Dr. King’s legacy and encouraging the members of the Potomac community to take action through service. Watch a recording of the assembly and enjoy photos from the event.

    English 7 Students Shipwrecked

In Ms. Green’s English 7 class, students recently engaged in a survival activity. As part of their discussion for Shipwreck at the Bottom of the World, students imagined being part of an Antarctica expedition. Unfortunately, their expedition boat capsizes, and students are forced into lifeboats. Using their civil discourse guidelines, students had to drop 60 pounds of weight from their lifeboat in order to survive and debated what resources to keep and what to drop. Fortunately, discussion groups successfully practiced compromise, dropped the required weight, and survived the activity!

    February Conferences

IS parents may log in to the Parent Portal beginning at noon on Wednesday, January 31, to sign up for a February conference with their child’s advisor. Most conferences will be held on Friday, February 9, with a few additional dates and times being offered by advisors. All available slots will be posted in the Parent Portal section of CampusNET.

The indoor track and field team recently traveled to the VA Showcase meet in Virginia Beach to race on one of the country’s fastest tracks and test themselves against national competition. Matt Brow ‘24 won the 1-mile race walk event, and the girls 4x400m team of Ally Griswold ‘26, Tenley Overdeck ‘24, Kate Tuttle ‘24, and Reagan Exley ‘24 achieved a qualification standard for Nike Indoor Nationals coming up in NYC in March. In addition to several new VISAA indoor state qualifications— ninth graders Rose Barabanov ‘27 and Grayson Crittenberger ‘27 both qualified in the 55m and 300m events— the team racked up 20 personal records, including a packed weekend of three PRs for Noah Altschuler '25 in all three of his events, the 1000m, 1600m, and 3200m.

Indoor track and field is back in action this weekend with a split-squad schedule on January 19 at the Maroon & Black Relays at Episcopal HS and January 20 at Georgetown Prep.
