Happy Lunar New Year! Our students have been celebrating this event with assemblies, classroom and community activities, and Potomac’s annual Middle School dragon parade. Here's wishing everyone a year of longevity, peace, and prosperity. Happy Year of the Rabbit!

Get in on the Scholarship Auction Fun

The 2023 Scholarship Auction is just over a month away! There are several exciting ways to support this important initiative, which raises funds for student scholarships and faculty professional development. Here's how you can get in on the fun:

  • Purchase Your Best of Live Tickets. The live auction features some incredibly unique and exciting items. By purchasing a Best of Live raffle ticket, you have the opportunity to win one of these items for just $100. Only 250 Best of Live tickets will be sold and 100 have already been purchased. In the past few years, these tickets have sold out prior to the event, so get yours now!

  • Think Wine. For many years, the auction has included an excellent selection of wines and spirits from around the world. Mark your calendar for our wine party on Sunday, February 5, hosted by the Steindler and Lucier families; this is a great chance to join other wine aficionados in donating some bottles for the auction. Consider tapping your collection; or view our wish list of items.

  • Volunteer. Our fantastic Administration Committee, led by Leigh Mayrhofer, is looking for new team members who can help with data entry of donated items into Greater Giving, the online auction platform that Potomac uses. This is a low commitment, low pressure, super zen, come-and-go volunteer opportunity! Spend as little or as much time as you’d like, and come back whenever you’re on campus and have some time to spare. (It's also a chance to get a fun preview of the many great items that will be available in the auction!) If you are interested in learning more about this opportunity, please email Leigh Mayrhofer and Alexis Ellis.

    LS Celebrates Lunar New Year

Students in the Lower School were treated to a beautiful Lunar New Year table display that includes Mandarin oranges – symbolizing luck, prosperity, and a long life. This resource page shares more information about how the Lunar New Year is celebrated across different Asian countries. Also called Chinese New Year, this traditional festival is the most important holiday in China. It is also widely celebrated in South Korea, Vietnam, and countries with a significant overseas Chinese population.

First Grade Phases of the Moon

First grade students have begun a unit about the moon and stars. In class this week, they learned about phases of the moon and how although the moon is black, it appears white because it reflects the light of the sun. After discussing the shapes of a crescent, gibbous, half moon, full moon, etc., the students used Oreos to depict the various lunar phases. It was tre-moon-dous fun!

Next Sharing Assembly is February 10

Reading with Preschoolers at Higher Horizons

Over the last two weeks, all fifth grade students visited Potomac community partner Higher Horizons, a Head Start program in Bailey's Crossroads. Our students shared their love of reading with the preschool students by reading picture books in the classroom and community spaces. While onsite, the fifth graders heard from Leon Sims, site supervisor, about the importance of listening to older students read as part of a preschooler’s literacy development. Fifth graders also selected children's books from November’s Book Fair to provide gift book donations during the winter holidays, as part of this grade-level service learning initiative.

    Last Field Trip of January

On January 31, Ms. Armstrong's and Ms. White's fourth grade classes will head to Martha's Table for a valuable service learning trip.

    MS Celebrates Lunar New Year

Middle School celebrated the Lunar New Year in a few different ways. Grade 5 brought their musical and colorful dragon parade around campus, leading into a Sharing Assembly where students performed songs, skits, dances, and more. In Ms. Chung’s grade 5 class, Yimo He ‘30 shared some of her family’s traditions and also explained how the lunar calendar came about, what rituals people follow, and the types of food they enjoy around this time of the year. YC5ers also learned how to count in Chinese and listened to the origin story about the 12 Chinese Zodiac animals. View photos from the parade.

MS Report Cards Available on February 1

Middle School semester reports will be available to parents in the parent portal section of CampusNET on Wednesday, February 1, by 3:00 pm. Parents should review their child's report card in advance of their conference time.

    Parent-Teacher Conference Sign-ups Are Open

MS parents may now log into the parent portal and sign up for a conference with their child's homeroom teacher. The portal will close at 12:00 noon on Wednesday, February 1. Sixth grade conferences will be student-led and will last 20 minutes. Fourth and fifth grade conferences will run 25 minutes each.

Basketball Clinic for MS Students - February 2

Eighth Graders Learn More About Food Insecurity

On Wednesday, eighth graders participated in “Face Hunger,” a simulation led by the Capital Area Food Bank (CAFB). Megan Curran, a CAFB partnership engagement manager, discussed food insecurity in our local community. Then, students broke into three groups to complete a role play activity designed to help them better understand the challenges that 1-in-10 DC-area residents face each day. This learning activity was part of the eighth grade community action program focused on food insecurity.

    “Starry Night” Themed Dance Tomorrow

The annual Intermediate School Dance will take place in the IS Commons tomorrow, January 27, 7:00-9:00 pm. Please ensure that your child has dinner beforehand and reviews the drop-off and pick-up instructions below. Should you have any questions or concerns, contact Vic Taylor or Jeremy Sandler.

Instructions for drop-off and pick-up: Due to the expected increase in traffic, we ask that parents drop off and pick up their students in the Bus Square, located in front of the Middle School. The lot will be cleared to be used as a rolling kiss and ride. Cones will mark a giant horseshoe to enter and depart. Please do not park and prevent other cars from accessing this area. Our pick up will be at the same time that the US Winterfest concludes, so it is important that IS parents follow this procedure. Be sure to stay to the right as you enter campus, to continue up the main drive. Carpooling is encouraged to reduce traffic. If you need to park, please use the LS parking lot.

    IS Welcomes Author and Illustrator

There is nothing more exciting for an author than a book release party. Author Steve Sheinkin and illustrator Nick Bertozzi recently joined grades 5-8 in celebration of the release of their brand new graphic novel, Bomb. Students learned how they took the non-fiction book Bomb: The Race to Build and Steal the World’s Most Dangerous Weapon by Sheinkin, and transformed it into a graphic novel. Other highlights included seventh grader Carter Reynolds joining Bertozzi on stage to learn how to draw Robert Oppenheimer, the father of the atomic bomb, and the authors sharing embarrassing stories from their teen years. Special thanks to Politics and Prose for sharing the book's creators with us.

    US Winterfest Returns Tomorrow

All Upper School students are encouraged to attend Winterfest on Friday, January 27, a tradition that is returning for the first time since January 2020. This year's event will feature a dual varsity wrestling meet, as Potomac takes on Lewis High School in the Landry Wrestling Arena. There will also be an a capella concert, plenty of food (dinner is included), and the beloved 3v3 basketball tournament organized by the varsity basketball teams. This year, we are also excited to welcome Cameron's Coffee and Chocolates to sweeten up our event with treats. Lunar New Year Celebration

Tuesday brought a variety of performances, games, and opportunities for students to learn about and celebrate the Lunar New Year. From a professional Chinese opera performance to student-led performances arranged by US Chinese teacher Carol Jia, the assembly showcased some of the ways people around the world ring in the Lunar New Year. Afterward, the Crossroads was abuzz, with a calligraphy station, a chopstick competition, and a masterclass in making (and eating) dumplings, thanks to a crew of parent volunteers. Appreciation and applause to the students who modeled tremendous courage in getting up on stage and performing in a non-native tongue. Happy Year of the Rabbit!

Game Changers Ice Skating with Second Story Returns

Last Wednesday, 12 members of the US Game Changers program hosted 14 guests from Second Story at the Pentagon Row Ice Skating Rink for an evening of skating, fun, and pizza. Students from both Second Story and Potomac celebrated the return of this long-standing event, a first time in three years. Steve Goldberg Shares Story of "My Friend Abe"

The Upper School was privileged to welcome former Potomac history teacher Steve Goldberg back to campus to share the story of his friend, and now-deceased Holocaust survivor, Abe Piasek. Splicing together photographs, historical context, and clips of Abe speaking and being interviewed, Mr. Goldberg shared a captivating tale of resilience amid devastating inhumanity. He followed up his assembly presentation with a lunchtime conversation where a smaller group of students and teachers were able to ask questions about Abe's life and the work Mr. Goldberg is doing to continue telling his story.

    Photography Lunchtime Conversation

Monday’s Lunchtime Conversation featured a triple treat: a family of three photographers. Jamey Stillings, Esha Chiocchio, and their son, Zubin Stillings. Each showed samples of their work and shared their respective career journeys.

Jamey Stillings began as a documentary photographer and evolved into a high-end advertising photographer who makes time for personal projects that focus on aerial photography of renewable energy solutions. He has exhibited this work widely and published three photo books, with a fourth on the way.

With a master’s degree in sustainable communities, Esha Chiocchio is a documentary photographer with a focus on environmental conservation and traditional wisdom. She shoots around the world for clients. She shared that her first assignment was with National Geographic (very rare when a photographer is just starting out!) She passed on some helpful shooting tips to attendees.

Zubin Stillings is currently on a gap year after high school and spending lots of time experimenting with different subject matter for his photography. He likes to use his friends as models and play with different photographic approaches.

    S.T.E.A.M. Spring Break Camp

It was full S.T.E.A.M. ahead as Extended Day recently experimented with art and science. We had fun creating lava lamps and learning about liquid densities, using food coloring, water, and cooking oil to conduct our experiment along with the star of the show, Alka Seltzer. The Alka Seltzer reacted with the colored water to create bubbles; as they moved to the top, the bubbles would pop and colored water would fall back down to the bottom. Everyone enjoyed watching the chemical reaction that gave the lava lamp effect!

For more fun experiments, sign your child up for our Spring Break S.T.E.A.M. Squad camp (for students in grades 1-3), which will be held March 13-17. Spring into action and register today!

    Sports Spring Break Camp

Students in grades K-6 are invited to sign up for a Spring Break camp with Coach Mays. Get ready for a week full of sports and good fun. Panther Spring Break Sports Camp is a chance for your child to enjoy organized sports and games while sharpening their skills, learning through “teamwork to make the dream work,” and enjoying recreational activities with their peers. Mark your calendars for March 13-17m and register your child today!
