    Welcome to New Faculty

Last week, Upper Schoolers gathered to officially welcome our new faculty cohort to the division. Each faculty member had a moment to introduce themselves in the ways they wanted to: some told a meaningful story, some were interviewed by one of our student emcees, and one gave an inspirational speech about ways we can be kind to others. We are so lucky to have such an energetic, personable group of new faculty at the Upper School this year. While they've already been getting to know students in their classes, it was great to have a moment to get to know them as an Upper School community.

    Students Consider Digital Citizenship

This week, the Upper School spent time learning about digital citizenship, the idea that how we treat each other online is equally important as how we treat each other in person. A small committee of faculty has been exploring ways to address the issue with students since the summer, and we were excited to launch our first all-school program devoted to the subject this week. At the program, senior leaders introduced students to a case study—a made-up situation based on events that could have been real—and then students had the opportunity to reflect on the case study in their advisory groups, thinking through how different characters in the story might have felt and what should happen next in order to make things right. Advisory conversations were robust and thoughtful, and we look forward to returning to this subject periodically throughout the year.

US Students Represent Potomac at MPAartfest

On October 1, Potomac students from the Upper School's robotics team and the Fem n' STEM club enthusiastically volunteered at the McLean Project for the Arts' MPAartfest. The vibrant outdoor event draws thousands of local residents annually and features a dedicated STEM tent managed by Potomac students. Throughout the six-hour event, attendees had the opportunity to explore two engaging activities. The first station showcased remote-controlled robots and robotic building materials, while the second table invited participants to create their lava lamps using water, vegetable oil, food coloring, glitter, and Alka-Seltzer tablets. The Potomac tent became a hub of activity, drawing in dozens of local youth and their families who actively engaged with Potomac students and faculty. For more than ten years, the Potomac Robotics program has been an integral part of this Northern Virginia event, inspiring interest in science and technology and promoting STEM education within the community. The Fem n' STEM club, in its seventh year, currently has over 40 US members who collaborate with female students in the lower divisions, fostering and kindling an interest in STEM.
