Friday Night Lights a Shining Success

Thank you to our entire community for the collective effort to make Friday Night Lights an amazing success! We welcomed more than 1,000 people to campus last Friday evening, including students, families, faculty and staff, alumni, and trustees. The weather was perfect, the food trucks and the Panther Pit stayed busy, the student activities and parent socials were well attended, and of course our Panthers took care of the Maret Frogs.

FNL was a great example of what Potomac is capable of when we come together as a connected, engaged community. We’re going to keep the momentum going and create more opportunities to build and share our Potomac Pride. Enjoy the FNL photo gallery!

On Monday, everyone from Harry Potter and Albert Einstein to astronauts and superheroes marched through campus during Potomac's annual Kindergarten Halloween Parade. Enjoy pictures of our youngest students (and two strangely familiar superheroes) in costume.

Election Connection - Casual Dress Day

To stress the importance of voting as a civic duty, MS students will have a red, white, and blue-themed casual dress day on Election Day, November 8. We will gather as a division that morning in the Langstaff Auditorium to hear from community members about why voting is important to them.

    Label, Label, Label!

Our lost and found bin is getting very full, thanks to wildly varying weather. Sweatshirts and fleeces come off and are often misplaced or forgotten. It’s easy to return things to their proper owners when the clothing is labeled with their name; otherwise, not so much. Please take a moment to label your child’s personal items, particularly fleeces and sweatshirts.

    Sixth Grade “Pilgrimage”

As part of their study of medieval Europe, sixth graders will engage in an on-campus “pilgrimage” on Friday, November 4. Echoing the classical pilgrimage from medieval times, the students will traipse through our campus woods, where faculty members will regale them with stories adapted from Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales. And who knows, they may have to avoid a bandit or two on their journey!

    An Enjoyable Autumn Assembly

The MS Autumn/Halloween Assembly was the culmination of weeks of preparation - and what a success it was! Every Middle School student contributed in some way: performing songs, playing instrumental pieces, and/or participating in dramatic performances. Several sixth graders were featured, reading a poem, playing the piano, and performing the witches’ scene from Macbeth. Performing in the dark with only a blacklight as their lightsource, Middle School Handbell students rang “The Blood Moon” during their first performance of the year. The MS Band performed an exciting multimedia experience entitled “Mechanical Monsters,” and Grade 6 Strings successfully gave their first public performance of the year with “Deep Sea Fandango.” The Grade 6 Chorus gave great renditions of “Benjy Met the Bear” and “Old Abram Brown.” Bravo to all for their efforts. On Tuesday, November 8, IS students are invited to participate in a red, white, and blue-themed casual dress day connected to Election Day.

    Adopting and Studying a Tree

Seventh grade students have adopted a tree on campus to study throughout the year. They have each created a Google Site to organize their data, which will include measuring their tree’s height, measuring the nitrogen concentration in the soil, watching buds form and change throughout the seasons, and monitoring habitat changes. Be sure to ask your seventh grader to share their site with you!

    A Second Story Halloween Party

For the first time since March 2020, our IS students hosted their friends from community partner Second Story for an on-campus event. Twenty young guests attended the 17th annual IS Halloween Party, held in the new outdoor Science and Arts Pavilion behind the Lower School. Thank you to the members of the IS Service Learning Committee who planned the event and to all of the student volunteers for helping to decorate the pavilion and prepare goodie bags. It was wonderful to see our Potomac students and their Second Story guests together again here at Potomac!

    “Core” Characters in IS

During Community Time on Tuesday afternoon, the students learned about NASCAR engineer Richie Parker as part of their “Core” Characters yearlong theme. Over the course of the school year, the students will hear about individuals who, in one epic moment or throughout their lives, have exhibited one or more of Potomac's core values. Mr. Parker’s story is one of incredible perseverance. Born with no arms, Mr. Parker went on to graduate from college and currently lives by himself and works as a car engineer for one of NASCAR’s most successful racing teams. During the assembly the students watched this video and then identified strategies Mr. Parker and others often employ to push through challenges and meet goals.

    Interim Reports and Parent-Teacher Conferences

Tomorrow, November 4, interim grades and comments will be shared with students during advisory and made available in the parent portal section of CampusNET at 3:00 pm. If you need assistance accessing the parent portal, please contact Loretta Sevier.

On Saturday, November 5, 9:00 am, sign-ups for US parent-teacher conferences will open, also accessed through the parent portal. Conferences will be held in 10-minute blocks of time on Thursday, November 10, and Friday, November 11. We ask that families sign up for no more than three parent-teacher conferences, and we encourage you to think about the conferences as opportunities to learn more about how your child is experiencing their classes. To determine which teachers to select for conferences, parents can review the interim report, speak with their child, and touch base with the student’s advisor if needed.

    SERC Students Travel to MIT

Sophomores in Potomac’s Science and Engineering Research Center (SERC) program recently enjoyed an informative visit to MIT. They learned how research is conducted in a college setting and gained insight into various areas of research, including brain imaging, battery construction, carbon capture, and ion propulsion systems for cube satellites. The goal of the trip was to allow SERC students to experience a vast range of scientific research topics at a top higher ed institution as they begin to decide on their individual areas of interest. The students were accompanied by SERC teachers Laura Petro and Bill Peery.

    Chinese Pen Pals Discuss Culture

Carol Jia’s Upper School Chinese program students recently had an exciting virtual language and culture exchange with high schoolers in China. Our students were excited to share information about their school life, living in the national capital area, and Halloween traditions – in Chinese. They also shared their favorite songs and sports stars and discussed cultural differences between the two countries. Students are always excited to practice their foreign language skills by chatting with native speakers in a real-life setting!

    US Halloween Costume Contest

Championships are nice, but any Upper Schooler knows that the real prize is winning the annual US Halloween Costume Contest. Each year, all faculty and students are invited to participate in individual and group categories. This year's competition was riveting. Despicable Me provided the inspiration for many of the costumes, but the most impressive entrants were faculty members James Gillespie with a DIY Optimus Prime that actually transformed and a terrifying Ms. Shawn Lizarazo as "Mommy Dearest." Audrey Rentzepis '24 was quite convincing as a chimney sweep, and the day's overall winner was Jake from State Farm, AKA Nicholas Derisca '26. The group division was won by seniors Marcus Burrell and Devin Dunn (boxers), senior NJ Langman (referee), and sophomore EJ Schneeberg (promoter).

SYA and Other Programs to Visit Potomac

Representatives from School Year Abroad (France, Italy, and Spain) and several semester schools will speak with sophomores tomorrow to share information about opportunities available during their junior year. After the presentation, interested students are invited to stay and learn more from the representatives from School Year Abroad or any of the visiting semester schools: Alzar School (Chile and Idaho), High Mountain Institute (Colorado), The Island School (The Bahamas), and The Oxbow School (California). Additionally, a representative from Maine Coast Semester will be available during lunch on Wednesday, November 9, to share information about their program. If you have any questions about these programs, please email Tory Virchow (semester schools) or Diana Page (School Year Abroad).

Speech and Debate Competes at University of Florida

The Potomac School Speech and Debate team competed at the University of Florida this past weekend, producing five place winners and four semifinalists in various events. The tournament featured roughly 150 schools from 24 states and a large turnout of big Florida speech and debate teams.

Potomac’s team was paced by senior Natalie Roots-Nowakowski, with a third-place finish in humorous interpretation. Fellow senior Olivia Eads was fourth in a huge congressional debate tournament. Junior Taylor Burris finished fourth in the extemp speaking invitational and sixth in the main extemp tournament. Sophomore Ethan Maher was ninth, and freshman Armaan Sethi was sixteenth, in congressional debate. Potomac also had four semifinalists in speech: junior Ayanna Nayar (oratory), junior Graeme Evans (humorous interpretation), sophomore Hannah de Souza (program oral interpretation), and Abigail Woldgebriel (extemp speaking).

Three Potomac public forum teams competed locally over the same weekend. Juniors Nuna Endale and Catherine Ruggeri took third to win their Metro finals bid. Most recent placement results are available here.

    “Dearly Departed” Arrives This Weekend

This weekend, the Upper School Theatre Department will present David Bottrell and Jessie Jones' Southern-inspired comedy Dearly Departed. When the patriarch of the Turpin family keels over dead, the struggle to get him buried involves the whole family, including the not-so-grieving widow. Amid the chaos, the Turpin family looks for comfort from their friends and neighbors, an eccentric community of misfits who manage to pull together and help one another through their hours of need. Performances will take place in the Langstaff Auditorium on Friday, November 4, at 6:30 pm, and Saturday, November 5, at 2:00 pm and 7:00 pm. Admission is free. That game will be livestreamed here.
