PASLC Power Pack Event

Over the weekend, more than 100 members of our Potomac community participated in our annual Parent Association Service Learning Committee’s (PASLC) Family Power Pack Event, creating 450 meal packs and handmade cards for our community partner, Food For Others. Hannah Brockway, development and communications coordinator for Food for Others, joined us to share about the organization's mission, local food insecurity, and the importance of Power Packs in providing weekend meals to children in the wider community. A big thank you to PASLC co-chairs Tiffany Butler and Rosie Pandhi for their leadership in planning the meaningful family service event and to our Potomac community for their generous donations of time and materials to make this generous donation a reality. They observed the sugar coating diffusing off Skittles and added a sugar cube in the center for even greater diffusion excitement. This was a sweet science lesson!

Health and Wellness Time Audit in IS

As part of the school’s health and wellness goals and initiatives, the Intermediate School students conducted a time audit last week in advisory. This exercise gave students an opportunity to reflect on how they spend their time and visualize their schedule in a typical week. They tracked time spent outside of school for extracurricular activities, homework, and sleep. The goal was to help them identify areas where there is “blank space” in their week that they could better manage, understand the importance of sleep, and appreciate the commitments they are balancing in their work and personal life in reference to the time they have available.

IS Concert Welcomes the Winter Season

The musical ensembles of the Intermediate School played and sang beautifully to welcome in the season at the IS Winter Concert last night. The string orchestra, concert chorus, handbell ensemble, and symphonic band performed seasonal selections such as “Jingle Bell Rock”; “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree”; “Fum, Fum, Fum”; and “Hanukkah Holiday”, respectively. Other crowd favorites included the string orchestra’s hummable “Emperor Waltz”, a dramatic choral medley from “Fiddler on the Roof”, a faithful rendition of ‘Arab Dance’ from “The Nutcracker” played by the handbells, and “Blue Sky Horizon”, an uplifting piece from the band. A photo gallery will be shared next week.

Agrawal finished the tournament with a quarter-final round placement in extemp speaking and a semi-final round appearance in impromptu speaking.

    Door Decorating Contest in IS

The IS Cup continues! The latest event for homerooms to earn points for their IS Cup team was a door decorating contest with a winter wonderland theme. The homerooms brought a unique and creative effort, and the final designs looked fantastic! See the slideshow announcing the winners.

    Beat-the-Clock Challenge

To get excited for the Tip-Off tournament, the IS gathered in Spangler last Tuesday to watch representatives from each IS Cup team attempt the Beat-the-Clock Challenge. Participants had 40 seconds to make a lay-up, free throw, three-pointer, and half-court shot. Although no teams, including faculty entries, advanced beyond the three-point line, the event got the students excited about the Tip-Off Tournament.

EFEB Speaker Inspires with Remarks on Reinvention

The Economics, Finance, Entrepreneurship, and Business (EFEB) Concentration hosted its first speaker of the school year with a visit by Potomac parent and past board chair Sameer Bhargava. Mr. Bhargava is the CEO of Clark Asset Solutions Group. In his talk entitled "Value of Reinvention," Mr. Bhargava approached the topic of reinvention from a personal perspective, in terms of managing one's career and from the perspective of building a business. He encouraged students to embrace the bolder decision and described the benefits of a zig-zag career path, as opposed to a structured path, to broaden thinking and build knowledge across multiple disciplines. Mr. Bhargava described the importance of reinvention for established companies and the culture of reinvention that Clark leadership creates to ensure that their teams identify and capitalize on changing market forces but with multi-dimensional thinking.

Chinese Class Students Engage in Cultural Exchange

This week, Upper School Chinese IV students, under the guidance of Ms. Carol Jia and Ms. Joy Webster, visited elderly Chinese residents at Hunters Wood Fellowship Building. This experience unfolded as a tapestry of cultural exchange, generational bonding, and profound service learning. The students savored authentic Chinese dishes prepared by the residents, recited classical poetry for them, and actively participated in learning Tai Chi. Beyond cultural preservation, the day emerged as a dynamic canvas of understanding – blending respect, compassion, and shared learning. Our students thoughtfully presented Potomac gifts and heartfelt cards as tangible expressions of gratitude and unity. This event created connections that resonated across generations and cultures.

    Drawing and Design ‘Speaks Up’

The walls of Upper School are exhibiting work from drawing and design class this month. The project called "Speaking Up" was inspired by the Malala Yousafzai quote, "When the whole world is silent, even one voice becomes powerful." The students thought of something that they wanted to say to our community. They chose a word and created an image that together expressed what they wanted to communicate. They used the block printing technique to create these images.
