ALUMNI SPOTLIGHTS

Leading, with Taste: Sasha DiGiulian’s Newest Adventure

Sasha DiGiulian

Sasha DiGiulian ‘11 is no stranger to leadership. A world-famous champion rock-climber, humanitarian, and business owner, Sasha has spent her career breaking boundaries, pushing the limits of what is possible, and achieving new heights – on mountains and in life.

Sasha was the first North American woman to accomplish an outdoor climb of grade 9a,5.14d, recognized as one of the most challenging sport climbs achieved by a female. She was also the first woman to conquer one of the hardest “Big Walls'' in the Italian Dolemites in 2013. She has accomplished multiple First Ascents and more than 30 First Female Ascents around the world, including a First Female Ascent on the North Face of the Eiger. This past fall, after a long recovery from multiple hip reconstruction surgeries during 2020 and 2021, Sasha led an all-female team to climb one of the hardest “Big Walls” in the world – Rayu, in Spain’s Cordillera Cantabrica region of Picos de Europa. The expedition was the first all-female climbing team to have achieved a “Big Wall'' of this caliber.

Niya Watkins Takes A Path of Her Own

Niya Watkins

Asking the right questions is critical when navigating the professional world, and Niya Watkins ’11 takes thinking about people and processes to a whole new level. In her job as a product designer who specializes in user experience (UX) at The Atlantic, Niya is immersed in studying people to understand where they’re coming from, what their habits are, and what will work best for them.

Think about what it’s like to navigate an unfamiliar website, experiencing all the photos and stories, the products and services, the comments and testimonials. Do you ever stop to think, “How did I get here?” and not in the philosophical sense. But what was your path to the particular page you find yourself looking at? How were you led there? Was it your intention to find what you are now seeing? Why did you leave one page and go on to something else? This is where Niya comes in. As a product designer working on the digital presence of an internationally known and highly respected publication, she focuses on crafting the perfect user experience, or user/customer journey, working to improve the site’s design and create web features that add value for visitors.

Isabel Froemming and the Future of Sustainable Fashion

Froemming Shirt

Style. Couture. Design. Luxury. There are so many words that leap to mind when we think of “fashion.” But who are the people at the helm of this industry?

The fashion world depends upon many artists and businesspeople with unique talents, without whose contributions the industry would crumble: designers, pattern-makers, stitchers, models, critics, consultants, entrepreneurs. Often, these roles are separate. But once in a rare while you will find a multi-talented individual who, appropriately speaking, wears a variety of hats within the fashion industry. Isabel Froemming ’16 is such a person.

Currently based in London, Isabel dons quite a few hats these days. She is a writer and blogger for various print and online fashion sites and magazines; she is a consultant and content editor at Luminaire, a high-end fashion consulting firm; she models for runway and print; and most recently, she has founded her own clothing line – Toile Vierge, a brand that specializes in sustainable fashion. As if owning and running her own small business weren’t enough, Isabel is also the primary designer for Toile Vierge garments.

Potomac Network

Are you looking for bright, energetic, and capable summer interns? Potomac has a pool of Upper School students and college-age alums seeking summer internships in all areas, including technology, finance, engineering, journalism, nonprofit, government, public service, and more. Consider helping high school students and college-age alumni gain hands-on work experience and develop skills and knowledge.

Non-classroom environments enable our students and alumni to learn experientially at cultural and community-based institutions, social justice organizations, and private companies. In addition, internships allow these young people to explore connections between their academic experiences and their professional aspirations.

Please help us make the "Potomac Connection" even stronger. We are also looking for sponsors for Senior Projects. If you are interested in participating, please fill out this form. All opportunities are welcome: in-person, virtual, and hybrid. The Alumni Office will share the information gathered here so that students and alumni can contact you directly. If you have questions, please get in touch with Laura Miller, director of alumni relations.

The Alumni Governing Council (AGC) Nominations Committee is seeking candidates to serve as council members for the upcoming term. We welcome the recommendations of the Potomac community as we seek to fill these important leadership positions. Please contact Laura Miller, director of alumni relations, if you are interested or would like to recommend a fellow alum.

Black History Month at Potomac

US Black History Month Assembly

Throughout the academic year, Potomac students learn about and celebrate the many contributions and achievements of African Americans, but Black History Month is a great time to dig deeper. In the past few weeks, our community has engaged in a number of special events and assemblies to honor the stories, culture, history, and impact of Black individuals in the U.S. and around the world.

Recently, the Upper School hosted a program about “The Divine Nine” – the nine original Black organizations that make up the National Pan-Hellenic Council. Potomac employees and parents shared their personal experiences and journeys as members of these organizations.

Earlier in the month, Upper School students welcomed an esteemed guest, journalist and former president of the National Press Club Jeff Ballou. Students from Potomac’s Black Student Union hosted an incredible program, honoring Black History through original spoken word, musical performances, Black art presentations, and commentary on Black media messages within our community. View photos and videos from the assembly.

The Intermediate School hosted a student-led Black History Month Assembly that included learning about the Bernie L. Bates Foundation, hearing about the origins of Black History Month, enjoying written expression and musical and dance performances, and other enlightening segments. View the gallery of pictures.

Our Lower and Middle Schoolers enjoyed Discovery Theater’s production of How Old Is a Hero? The play highlights the contributions and heroic actions of three young people who helped move our nation forward during the Civil Rights Movement – Ernest Green of the Little Rock Nine, Claudette Colvin, and Ruby Bridges. Their stories provide inspiring examples of perseverance, courage, social change, civil rights, and activism.

The Parent Cultural Competence Committee (PCCC) and Parents of Black Students (PBS) are also hosting a virtual Black History Month event on Tuesday, February 28, at 7:00 pm ET. The program will feature a wide-ranging, interactive discussion with Potomac parents, faculty, and recent graduates Atiba de Souza '22, Hannah Gilliard '22, and Brian McNeil Jr. '22. New Hires in the Athletics Department

Asha Franklin and Mark St. Germain

This year, Potomac’s Athletics Department has benefited from the talents and experience of two new assistant athletics directors: Asha Franklin and Mark St. Germain. Asha has more than a decade of college basketball coaching experience at the Division I, II, and III levels and previously served as director of women’s basketball operations at Pepperdine University. She has worked as a private consultant, recruiter, and scout and serves as a trainer with the Positive Coaching Alliance. Mark also brings extensive experience, having worked in independent school athletics for more than 25 years. He served as an assistant athletics director at St. Albans, Flint Hill, and St. Stephens & St. Agnes and helped to open John Paul the Great as that school's first athletics director. Most recently, Mark was a PE teacher, boys varsity lacrosse coach, and tenth grade dean at Maret. We sat down with Mark and Asha to explore their experiences as first-year Panthers and learn about the ways they are contributing to Potomac’s program.

Mark’s responsibilities include inspecting Potomac’s fields and courts on a daily basis to ensure their safety and coordinating transportation for athletes and coaches traveling to away games. One of his current projects is getting the batting cages up and running for the spring season. Meanwhile, Asha provides a wide array of support functions for the department, including working with Potomac’s Communications Office to coordinate sports information to be shared on social media and in the school’s weekly parent newsletter, Paw Prints. You can follow Potomac athletics on Instagram @potomacsports.

Both Mark and Asha also work directly with our student-athletes. Last fall, Mark coached the Intermediate School football team, and he will coach IS boys’ lacrosse this spring. Noting how much he enjoys helping young athletes achieve their potential, Mark says, “I want to be that guy who alumni remember as willing to put in the time to talk, and work personally with students.” Asha runs the department’s Managers Program, where she educates team managers on the sports they assist with and helps them understand how to interact with officials, opposing teams, and their coaches. Asha has also served as a special assistant for Potomac’s boys varsity basketball team, putting the players through some of the intense drills that she learned as a college coach. Due to the behind-the-scenes nature of many of her responsibilities, Asha didn’t think students would come to view her as a mentor, but the close-knit nature of the Potomac community has proved her expectation wrong. She says, “I’ve discovered that my job gives me the chance to get to know the kids as people first. There’s no pressure on them to impress me on the court or in a classroom, so the walls aren’t as high; this has given me valuable insights on how they view Potomac and their experience here.”

Both Asha and Mark are caring leaders that students can look to for guidance, support, and encouragement. Please join us in welcoming them to Potomac Athletics.
