Again this year, the Exemplary Service Award will be presented at Potomac’s Martin Luther King Day Assembly on Friday, January 12, 2024. The deadline for submissions is November 16.

Sixth Grade Ventures Into the Woods to Hear Canterbury Tales

On Tuesday, our sixth grade social studies curriculum came to life! Students became medieval pilgrims, and our campus transformed into the road to Canterbury. Classes enjoyed four school-appropriate Chaucerian tales told by Potomac faculty during stops on their travels. All students ultimately made it safely to Canterbury (their classrooms) without losing their fortunes to any brigands lurking along the way.

    Books, Books, Books!

Middle School is well on the way to reaching our divisional book donation goal of 2,000 books for the annual Book Fair. There is still time on Friday to bring in children's books and adult novels. Please remember to tally the books and note them as an MS donation. Earlier this week, each class received a pre-labeled Book Fair envelope. We encourage families to use the envelopes to hold cash for their child's scheduled Book Fair class visit day

Brief “Moment in the Sun” Monument Project

In grade 8 history class, students learned how freed people constructed their new lives in the post-emancipation era and discussed what freedom meant to formerly enslaved people. In this project, students designed a monument to teach Americans about a hero of Reconstruction. Students began by researching a topic in the history of Reconstruction and then created a monument prototype to reflect how their topic furthered freedom and equality during the Reconstruction era. Student monuments were accompanied by a plaque that described the monument's meaning and incorporated their research. John Mercer Langston, Frances Ellen Watkins Harper, Howard University, Joseph Rainey, and the Fisk Jubilee Singers were among the topics chosen by students.

US Community Supports Willy Wonka, Jr.

While the entire community gathered this weekend for our inaugural Potomac Theatre performance of the year, a rollicking interpretation of Willy Wonka, Jr., the Upper School got to experience a sneak preview of the show during the school day on Friday. Health and Wellness Assembly

On Tuesday, the Upper School gathered for a health and wellness-focused Panther Time assembly. Led by the Peer Leaders, a group of juniors and seniors who help educate students on issues related to wellness, the program served as an introduction to Potomac’s new definition of health and wellness for our Upper School community. The Peer Leaders developed immersive ways to introduce students to Potomac’s six “dimensions of wellness,” many of which involved getting students off their feet and interacting with each other in Langstaff Auditorium. We hope this shared language for what wellness means at Potomac will serve our community well as we move through the rest of the year!

Elite Level Athlete Speaks to Anatomy Class

During our study of the musculoskeletal system, the grade 12 anatomy and physiology class was fortunate to have a very local guest speaker who is an Olympic training center athlete, pro cyclist, and Lower School science teacher! Jessie McKinney spoke about her experience as an elite-level athlete, her strict training refinement, and the realities of professional athletics. The students were then able to ask her questions ranging from cycling terminology and techniques to the mental health struggles and performance enhancing drugs that so often permeate professional sports. Thank you for sharing your experience and story, Ms. McKinney!

Advanced Chinese Visits the China Folk House

The Upper School advanced Chinese class embarked on an immersive trip to the China Folk House in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. The house is a hub for cultural diversity, environmental stewardship, and experiential learning. Students explored the intricate blend of Han, Tibetan, Naxi, and Bai Chinese cultures within the house, diving into language learning by experiencing a pre-electricity agricultural lifestyle and witnessing the impact of modernization on traditional ways. They discovered the interplay of French culture and recognized the global interconnectedness present in the Folk House. Delving into traditional Chinese architectural techniques and crafting a meal from garden-grown produce, they grasped ancient craftsmanship and sustainability. The house's relocation from Yunnan, China, prompted discussions on globalization, fostering a deeper understanding of global connections and the importance of preserving heritage. This transformative experience enriched language skills, cultural appreciation, and environmental awareness among our students.

YouToo Tennis Club Finishes its Fall Season of Service

YouToo Tennis hosted its last session on Sunday, November 5, culminating a five-week-long fall program in partnership with the Autism Society of Northern Virginia (ASNV). The reciprocity between participating youth from ASNV and Upper School student volunteers was visible in each session, with all students benefiting from the meaningful experience together. A special thanks to our junior student leaders Anaahita Kaashyap, Sonali Sachdeva, and Cooper Schirmeier for their leadership throughout the season, helping ensure that all US volunteers learned about the specific needs of participants with developmental disabilities. Through relationships forged, Potomac students prioritized making personal connections through the game of tennis. Thank you also to more than 25 US volunteers and faculty chaperones for your dedication to helping this 12-year service program continue to thrive.

Girls Varsity Soccer Wins Back-to-Back ISL Championships!

Last week, the girls varsity soccer team completed the defense of their ISL tournament championship, and won back-to-back titles for the first time in over 20 years. On Monday, they took down GDS 4-1 with goals scored by Chloe Lee ‘25 (2 goals), Reagan Exley ‘24 and Alden Marin ‘26. In the semifinals on Wednesday, the Panthers held off Maret and won a close game 1-0, with the lone goal being scored by Megan Rowe ‘24. That set up the final on Friday vs Holton Arms. It was a tight battle the entire 80 minutes, but PGVS had a majority of the chances in the first half, and finally broke through 10 mins into the second half. Abby Collis ‘24 played a wonderful ball over the top and Exley did the rest, as she placed a perfect shot into the lower left corner. From there, Amory Imperatore ‘25 and the defense did the rest, keeping a shutout for the second straight game. The players now have their sights set on winning the NOVA state tourney this week, as they dominated PVI on Tuesday with another 3-0 shutout. Marin scored two goals and Lee added one to the final tally, while Exley ‘24 collected two assists. The NOVA state final is today, November 9. PGVS hosts Bishop O'Connell in a rematch of last year’s title game. Please come cheer on the Panthers for the 2:30 pm game on Gum Tree!

    Boys Varsity Soccer Update

Last week the boys varsity soccer lost to Sidwell Friends 5-2 in the MAC Tournament finals. Lawson Watt ‘27, captain Patrick Ritter ‘25 and Colin Cordell ‘25 all contributed to Potomac’s two goals. This week, the #2 ranked Panthers defeated #10 St. Anne’s-Belfield School 3-0 in the quarterfinals of the VISAA Division I State Tournament. Ritter and fellow senior Eli Butler ‘24 each scored, followed by a goal from Ege Kirgis ‘27, assisted by Ben Scharf ‘26. Senior keeper Walker Lyall ‘24 recorded his seventh shutout of the season. Penalty kicks decided the state semifinals match up as the Panthers fell to #3 St. Christopher’s yesterday.

Girls Varsity Tennis Advances to State Semis

The girls varsity tennis team had a decisive 5-0 win in the state quarterfinals against Episcopal. Impressive playing by all three doubles teams set the tone for a dominant win. Thanks to our #1 doubles team of Hope Dennis ‘24 and Riley Williams ‘26 with an 8-1 win, #2 doubles team Riece Grimes-Thomas ‘26 and Deja Dimps ‘25 with a hard fought 8-6 win, and finally our #3 doubles team of Daelyn Dimps ‘24 and Sonali Sachdeva ’25 with an 8-2 win. Williams cruised at #1 singles 8-0 and Sachdeva secured the team win, 8-2 at #5 singles. This was a great team effort up and down the lineup. PGVT takes on first-seeded Collegiate in the semifinals today at 1:30 pm!
